Residents Rise Up Against Highway Rest And Inspection Area

Residents have demanded Roads and Maritime Services dump plans for the construction of a driver rest area and truck inspection bay at Meroo Meadow, north of Bomaderry.

About 40 people attended a meeting at the Nowra Showground last night discussing plans for the duplication of 11KM of the highway between Bomaderry, and the southern end of the proposed Berry by pass.

Work has already started on the upgrade of the highway between Gerringong and Toolijooa, and will be followed by the section south to Bomaderry.

Duplication from Berry to Bomaderry will be final stage of the duplication, with no word at this stage when work work will start.

Shoalhaven Deputy Mayor Cr Andrew Guile says the government has been told to forget Meroo Meadow and take the rest area to the corner of the highway and Flinders Road at South Nowra, and the inspection bay to the Albion Park by pass

Driver Killed In Milk Tanker Crash

The driver of a milk tanker has been killed in a crash in Sydney overnight. Operated by Mc Colls Transport the tanker careered over a median strip, across two lanes of traffic, without hitting opposing vehicles, and then into the front of a two storey block of shops. Anger Builds Over Costly Delays To Merrigang Street Upgrade

Wingecarribee Council has admitted reports the cost of saving four trees in Merrigang Street in Bowral will be almost half a million dollars, are only early estimates. Council this week rejected moves to remove the trees and re-start work on the multi million dollar re-construction of the badly pot holed street. Instead the trees, which arborists say will not last more than 10 years, will stay for the time being, and work on the project has been deferred until October, after the completion of Tulip Time. Highlands Police Youth Club Step Closer

A PCYC in the Wingecarribee could become a reality in the next 12 months if the project is accepted by the State Government and the heads of PCYC. The local PCYC Association approached council to fast track the project, and the shire has now agreed to do what it can. Location suggestions have been the Mittagong recreational centre or Hilltop hall. There are also plans of establishing an outreach centre to service North and South of the Wollondilly Shire.
