Huge Cruise Ship In Jervis Bay

Sunday, 24 June 2012 07:15

P and O's huge cruise liner the Pacific Jewel has dropped anchor in Jervis Bay.

The 70,000 tonne  ship  is on a  3 night comedy cruise out of Sydney and has anchored off Jervis Bay's eastern shore.

After returning to Sydney the ship departs June 25 for a 10 night cruise to Noumea.

Pacific Jewel was built in Italy in 1989 and has operated with P and O Australia for almost two years.

In her current configuration she carries more than 2,000 passengers and a crew of over 600.

Passengers remain  on board for the duration of the Jervis Bay stop over because there are no berthing facilities in the area for such a large vessel.

It has been proposed to include a cruise boat berth as a part of the planned Callala marina, but the project is a long way short of getting off the ground.

Some specialist  cruiser liners like the Orion allow their passengers off in Jervis Bay because they are equipped with small ship to shore tenders.
