Work Starts On $310M Highway Upgrade- Fly The Route

The first sod of soil will be turned this morning on the biggest state public works project ever undertaken in the region....the $310 million first stage of the upgrading of the Princes Highway at Gerringong.

Roads Minister Duncan Gay will perform the honours, marking the start to work on duplicating the road over a distance of 7KM between the top of the Kiama bends and Toolijooa.

The work includes new interchanges to get traffic in and out of Gerringong, and bridges over the south coast rail line.

The yet to be funded stage two of the work is expected to cost about $600 million and will include the Berry by pass.

In the final stage the duplication will be extended to Bomaderry.

Meantime about 150 people have attended a question and answer session on the Berry by pass, which the state government announced last month will go north of the town.

The meeting was told the northern option is $100 million cheaper than the southern option which would have required a 12 hundred metre long viaduct.

The government now plans a full environmental assessment of the northern route, and hopes to submit documentation to the Department of Planning by the middle of next year.

Truck Crash Closes Hume Highway

There have been major delays to traffic on the Hume Highway this morning following a truck crash near Marulan. The accident happened about 10KM south of the town, and at one stage led to the closure of both south bound lanes. Traffic was banked back for about 6KM. One lane has been re-opened, and the second will follow when the wreckage is cleared. North bound traffic is flowing freely. Read more

Knife Wielding Bandit Flees With Cash After Armed Hold Up

Police are searching for a man following an armed robbery at Bomaderry this morning. The incident happened about 6 when a man armed with a stainless steel kitchen knife threatened staff at the Bomaderry Newsagent in Bolong Road. After being given an un-disclosed amount of cash the man fled the scene and a short time later was seen in Bunberra Street. He is described as being caucasian in appearance and was wearing a flouro coloured mask and a black hoodie. Witnesses say the man has blue eyes and was also wearing blue jeans. Read more

Surge Of Seaside Complaints Over Sale Of Bush Block

Shoalhaven Council is under intense pressure to reject a development application proposed for land sold for un-paid rates to a Sydney man at a bargain basement price. Residents say council sold three blocks of foreshore land at Callala Beach to a Sydney man two and a half years ago for $6,500 each. Locals says prime waterfront blocks could now be expected to fetch more than $1.5 million. Residents say they were under the impression the land was foreshore reserve and could not be built on, although checks have revealed that is not necessarily the case, because homes are permissible under certain conditions.
