Report Criticises Shoalhaven Tourism-Lacks Sophistication

A report by consultants into Shoalhaven tourism says the sector is less sophisticated than other areas competing to attract visitors from Sydney and Canberra.

The report has been prepared by Jenny Rand and suggests councils tourism unit is under resourced and was critical of the tourism board, saying needs to take a more interventionist role in increasing visitation.

Visitors currently inject more than $670 million a year into the local economy, and recently retired Tourism Manager Tom Phillips says in the foreseeable future it will be a billion dollar industry.
The reports says Nowra needs a minimum four star hotel, while developing the Shaolin temple at Comberton Grange and a large safe boat harbour will be crucial for future growth.
Gilmore MP and Mayoral candidate Jo Gash says the industry has done really well in today's difficult market, but believes council needs to ease the tight control over the tourism board

Local Student Wins NASA Scholarship

A Year 12 student from Nowra Christian School has been accepted for work experience with NASA at the International Space Camp in Alabama. Seventeen year old Aimee Parsons from Culburra applied for the exclusive scholarship in January and much to her surprise was selected as one of two Australian representatives. Thirty two students from across the world will begin the camp from the 19th July, which runs for a week and covers many elements of Astronaut training. Safety Warning After Serious Farm Accident

A serious accident west of Marulan has prompted a warning from Work Cover for more care to be taken on farming properties. A 38 year old grazier has suffered serious arm injuries after being crushed by the tray of a tip truck after it unloaded 20 tonnes of fertiliser on a property at Taralga. General Manager of Workcover's Work Health and Safety division John Watson says the accident was completely avoidable. Mr Watson says the worker was completing paper work and did not see the hoist coming down. Read more

Council Tells Maccas To Lift Design Standards For MV Store

Wingecarribee Council has penned an 8 page letter to the world biggest fast food outlet telling executives it does not think much of the appearance of its proposed outlet in Moss Vale. Mc Donalds wants to develop the family restaurant on the site of an old car yard beside the Illawarra Highway and Bowral Moss Vale Road roundabout. An application for the development was lodged almost a year ago, but council has told the company its design plans are not of a standard it would expect for a ' gateway ' site into Moss Vale.
