Rare Chance To See Historic Lighthouse Come Alive

Thursday, 16 August 2012 23:44

Point Perp light old and new The lower levels of the Point Perpendicular lighthouse and grounds will be open to the public today (fri) and all weekend as part of international lighthouse weekend.

Viewers are recommended to arrive by 5pm to see the lighthouse come alive  from dusk.

Located on the northern headland at the entrance to Jervis Bay the lighthouse and its adjoining keepers houses were built in 1889 and operated until 1993, when the original light was replaced with an automated facility.

Point_Perpendicular Light The 9 beams on the beacon are so powerful they can be seen 26 nautical miles to sea.

The lighthouse is located at the end of the Beecroft Weapons Range road, south of the Currarong village.

The Department of Defence has just undertaken a major structural refurbishment of the lighthouse, which took six months to complete.

Ian Clifford from Lighthouses Australia says it will be a rare chance to see one of the nation's most historic lights back at its brilliant best.

For more details ring the Beecroft Ranger Station on 4448 3411.

Council is concerned the removal of the vegetation will increase the risk of sand dune erosion, and like in the past,  threaten homes with wave action. It believes erection of... Read more
