Courageous Burns Victim Turia Seeking $10m In Damages

The organisers of an outback ultra marathon which has left a young Ulladulla woman and other competitors with severe burns could face a law suit for up to $10 million.

TURIA PITT from Ulladulla and KATE SANDERSON were left with burns to more than 60 per cent of their bodies after a bushfire swept across the 100 kilometre course through the Kimberly region.

A West Australian parliamentary inquiry has been told the biggest mistake organisers made was not liasing with the Fire and Emergency Services Authority.

Committee chairman MIKE NAHAN says the event organisers, Racing the Planet, didn't involve people with appropriate knowledge in risk identification, when it planned the event.

Lawyers are now preparing papers for what is expected to be a multi million action against Racing the Planet, to recover damages for the injured competitors.

Local Student Wins NASA Scholarship

A Year 12 student from Nowra Christian School has been accepted for work experience with NASA at the International Space Camp in Alabama. Seventeen year old Aimee Parsons from Culburra applied for the exclusive scholarship in January and much to her surprise was selected as one of two Australian representatives. Thirty two students from across the world will begin the camp from the 19th July, which runs for a week and covers many elements of Astronaut training. With aspirations to become a pilot or aeronautical engineer Aimee has also been accepted into the Defence Force Academy next year. Aimee says she cant wait... Read more

Safety Warning After Serious Farm Accident

A serious accident west of Marulan has prompted a warning from Work Cover for more care to be taken on farming properties. A 38 year old grazier has suffered serious arm injuries after being crushed by the tray of a tip truck after it unloaded 20 tonnes of fertiliser on a property at Taralga. General Manager of Workcovers Work Health and Safety division John Watson says the accident was completely avoidable. Mr Watson says the worker was completing paper work and did not see the hoist coming down. Read more

Council Tells Maccas To Lift Design Standards For MV Store

Mc Donalds wants to develop the family restaurant on the site of an old car yard beside the Illawarra Highway and Bowral Moss Vale Road roundabout. An application for the development was lodged almost a year ago, but council has told the company its design plans are not of a standard it would expect for a ' gateway ' site into Moss Vale. Council has suggested the company consider using locally made Bowral clay bricks, and rock from some of the region's quarries. Town planners also say they do not like the proposed use of imitation...
