What's biting around the Illawarra?

Wednesday, 28 March 2012 08:42

The next couple of months sees the transition of the seasons and a crossover of both summer and winter fish species getting caught. Over this time we’ll also start seeing Mullet forming large schools in the bays and estuaries in preparation for their migration up the coast to spawn.

The water is starting clear from the recent heavy rains and now is the time to hit the beaches looking for Mulloway (Jewfish) and sharks that will be following the mullet schools as they head north. Tailor and Salmon will be active along the surf beaches and ocean rocks also as they also tend to follow the bait schools. Pilchards on ganged hooks will work best for the Tailor and Salmon.

With many of the creeks and rivers in the Illawarra still running high after the rain try fishing the beaches near where the creeks and rivers meet the surf. The turbulence caused by the meeting of these waters creates a veritable smorgasbord of bait for larger fish to feed on and acts to congregate feeding fish. Beaches such as Garie, Stanwell, Minnamurra and 7 Mile are good places to try now.

As the water cools throughout May and June winter species like Rock Blackfish (Drummer), Trevally and big Bream will be active around the rocks. The rocks north of the Gerringong boat ramp are a good place to try on the low tide as bait in the form of Cunjevoi can be collected here and is a great bait for drummer. Try using peeled Hawkesbury Prawns and fresh bread for the Bream and Trevally also. Remember to burley with bread to increase your chance of success.

Game fish such as Yellowtail Kingfish will continue to get caught throughout the cooler months also. Try using live bait like Slimy Mackeral around the Kiama rock pool and Blow Hole.

If you’re fishing the rocks remember not to fish alone and scope out your favourite spot before commencing to fish and make sure it’s safe.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE WATER AT ALL TIMES WHEN FISHING THE ROCKS!
