Second Golf Club Begs For Council Help

Tuesday, 26 June 2012 00:36

bowral golf couse In the wake of Wingecarribee Council's decision to waive lease payments on the Highlands Golf Club over a two year period, another golf club is asking for financial assistance.

Members of the Bowral Golf Club recently met with councillors to discuss ways of assisting the club to remain financially sustainable into the future.

The club is requesting a donation from council of around $90,000 which is equivalent to two years in general rates and water and sewer charges.

In a letter to council, Club President, Dr Ian McKenzie says the club's financial situation is becoming critical as membership has dropped, but costs such as maintaining the greens continue to escalate.

Dr McKenzie says a new Board has started to introduce a variety of initiatives to improve the club's financial situation such as developing ties with Sydney clubs and promoting the course as a tourist attraction.

However, council staff have recommended the request be rejected as council's donations budget cannot fund it and approval may create a significant precedent for other clubs to follow suit
