Conflicting Results Over Checks For Asbestos On Robo Roads

Thursday, 23 August 2012 00:12

asbestos warning sign Soil and air samples taken near contaminated roads around Robertson have found no traces of asbestos even though a visual inspection of the road pavement shows asbestos material is present.

Wingecarribee Council was told overnight (wed) that 29 core samples taken from Vandenbergh, Yeola, Fountaindale, and Lees Roads tested negative for asbestos fibres.

However, Deputy General Manager of Operations, Phil Marshall says a visual inspection shows there is asbestos in the road pavement, but it has not broken up or spread through the road base.

Council believes that there could be up to 15 roads that may be contaminated and consultants have been engaged to conduct a full risk assessment.

Workcover has also been consulted and an asbestos register established.

Council is still trying to determine the source of the material and is painstakingly looking over every delivery docket during the period from 2004 to 2008 when the road base was laid.

It could be another month before Council has all the relevant information and in the interim any asbestos material found in the roads is being sealed over to reduce the risk to residents.

Wilton Airport Plan May Be Dead In Water

Plans to develop Sydney's second international airport at Wilton between Mittagong and Campbelltown may be dead in the water, after plans were announced for a new residential city. The federal government has been investigating Wilton, but may be thwarted by a state announcement of plans for a possible new city of 12,000 new homes. Canberra is not keen on the original choice of Badgery's Creek near Liverpool, while Pmier BarryO'Farrell favours no sites within the Sydney Basin, and thinks Canberra is a better idea. Former Wingececarribee Mayor Ken Halstread also spoke out against Wilton during his term in office, warning there would be... Read more

More Federal Funds Available For Council Projects

Wingecarribee Council will get another chance to apply for federal infrastructure funding with the commonwealth adding an extra $150 million to the scheme. Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese says the funding will be provided under the government's regional development Australia Fund and Livable Cities programs. The funding can only be used to build and renew community infrastructure such as sporting facilities, libraries, town halls, playgrounds and essential services like childcare centres. However, to secure the new federal funding, councils must apply under the relevant program by July 22. Read more

Planning Underway To Upgrade Bowral Hospital

Planning Underway To Upgrade Bowral Hospital

While the southern highlands missed out on any major capital works funding in this week's state budget, Goulburn MP Pru Goward says the Bowral Hospital could be a big winner next financial year. Most of the funds allocated to Ms Goward's electorate will be spent on projects around Goulburn including a bridge over Oallen Ford near Nerriga and replacement of the Lansdowne bridge. But Ms Goward says the highlands may fare better in the next budget as she is negotiating with the Local Area Health Board for a major upgrade of Bowral Hospital. Read more
