POWER to the people! If state and federal governments ever needed a sign that we've had enough of excessive power charges, they received it.

The initial target of 25,000 was shattered yesterday, with almost 40,000 signing up by early last night.

The campaign aims to neutralise the impact of the carbon tax, which will add between 7.9 and 9.4 per cent to power bills from July 1.

Among the people to sign up at bigelectricityswitch.com.au yesterday was a state government minister.

Broken down by postcode, the two top areas for registrations were Gosford and Campbelltown, followed by two South Australian suburbs.

The next six places were taken up by NSW suburbs and towns: Bateau Bay, Baulkham Hills, Gwandalan, Liverpool, Greystanes and Kellyville.

Consumer advocate and One Big Switch campaigner Christopher Zinn said the areas had much in common, notably the pressing need to trim costs wherever possible.

The campaign initially aimed to attract 25,000 families in a month but shot past that target within 36 hours.

One Big Switch will challenge power companies in each state to offer the biggest discount possible.

It will then be up to those who have signed up to change companies.
