Dump the Spin .. Be Honest

Money

There is a budget crisis, when a third of what is spent is outlaid on welfare. $121 billion was spent last year which accounts for 32% of our expenditure. This figure is set to blow out with more “baby boomers” retiring, more jobs going offshore and the introduction of the Disability Insurance scheme. I don’t have a problem with that.

I have a problem about Government and the opposition’s honesty. I’m sick of the spin doctors. When we look at the increases in welfare  in years to come up plus an expected increase in health we have a problem. Do nothing and we’ll be robbing Peter to pay Paul. We now expect regular tax cuts and governments that don’t give tax relief are out.

Enter the spin doctors. How can we get more revenue? We’re not going to put up tax rates or the GST because we’ll be out at the next election. If we call it a Carbon Tax we’ll look good with the UN and they’ll receive a windfall from Australia to help underprivileged nations. We’ll also get support from the Greens and a good majority will know we are helping the  planet. Introduce a mining tax and we could direct some of this revenue towards infrastructure. Good plan?

The opposition say if elected out will go the Carbon Tax. That’s a promise but, what is going to replace it as we will need revenue to assist with welfare etc.

So what do we need? We need a Statesman and someone to tell us facts not spin. I just want politicians to tell us the truth, without the spin. If we have to tighten our belts tell us. If someone got up and spoke to me and said here’s the problem, this is how I’ll fix it you’d listen. Will it happen? The tooth fairy has left the building.

A Conversation We Need To Have

A Conversation We Need To Have

We will all die and we will all, at some time, probably care for someone who we love who is dying and we're so much better able to cope with that when we can support them by doing what they want. I guess it’s a subject we don’t want to discuss but a new survey has found one in two Australians who have recently lost a loved one had not discussed their dying wishes. The survey by Palliative Care Australia also found that only 15 per cent of those who died had left... Read more

On The Road At Last

On The Road At Last

For young people living out of main town centres, getting 120 hours of drive time can be a real challenge, especially if they don’t have a car or a person (or people) who can supervise their driving. And, without a drivers licence, they cannot get jobs in nearby towns (ie Nowra) or cities (ie Wollongong). They are at risk of becoming long term unemployed. Funding through the Australian Government via the Local Employment Coordinator’s Flexible Funding Pool has been gained to address this issue and try to break the cycle of no licence,... Read more

Aussies Living Overseas

Aussies Living Overseas

Australians love to travel. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 115,672 of us left home for a long-term stay of two years or more between 2011-12. But how much difference does a stint overseas make to your life in the long term. Does it offer you any particular advantage? And what brings people back home? I remember some of my friends living in London for a couple of years. They really missed home and took on all sorts of jobs just to survive. I think most were working 18 hours a day just to pay the... Read more
