1,900 to Loose Jobs at Fairfax

Fairfax

My family was employed by the print media for many years. My father was employed by both the Daily Telegraph then later News Limited and I had uncles that worked for the Fairfax group and News Limited. In my case I was a newsagent from 1980 to 1992. During my time 80% of sales of the Sydney Morning Herald were home deliveries. To see the Herald go to tabloid form from next year will disappoint many, at the same time, new readers will hopefully buy it.

Interesting to hear what people say about the plan for Fairfax Media.

Opposition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull says

The problem that the newspaper business faces is not lack of readers. There are more people reading their products than ever before. The problem is that the revenue has migrated onto other platforms like search, Google and so forth. What's been happening is that for every $7, $8, $9, $10 of print revenue they've lost, they're only picking up $1 or $2 of digital revenue. That varies from newspaper to newspaper. I think Fairfax is doing better than most in that regard, but that's is the problem - it is a revenue probably problem, not a readership problem."

Former editor of the Age Andrew Jaspan, says

"The current paper is too big. It's out of date. It was invented 155 years ago and frankly it's wrong for the current market. So moving to the compact is long overdue. I welcome that move. However, again, they announce it will happen in March next year. If this was News Limited running the company ... it wouldn't take until March next year. They just move too slowly."

Will you buy the Herald when it takes on a tabloid style similar to the Telegraph?

Social Networks Are Ruling Our Lives

Aussies love to embrace new technology. Baby boomers have seen so man changes from calculators, ATMs, computers, mobile phones the list goes on. Keeping P Platers Alcohol Free

Young drivers are not going to like this but Victoria's top traffic cop thinks they should be motoring around with a P-plate until they are 25 years old. With statistics to back him up, Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill told Fairfax Media that such a drastic move would help cut the state's road toll. It would mean young adults would have to drive with a zero blood alcohol level for an extra three years, or for the first seven years of solo driving. Mr Hill said 40 per cent of people aged 20 to 25 who... Read more
