Welcome to the Abyss

Welcome to the great abyss of sport for 30 days.  Absolutely nothing interesting in sport until March.

“But Nick, what about…..”

Spare me your mumbo jumbo about the pretend sports of February.

I care little for One Day Internationals.  No-one is gathered around the factory on Monday morning, happy we won by 1 billion runs against the poor hapless side the ICC chose as our whipping boys for summer.

“But the Rugby is starting again”  Yes, it is.  And we wait for the inevitable choke of the Waratahs.  It’s like watching Titianic.  I know the end, why bother with the start.  And there’s two chances of me barracking for the Reds.  Buckley’s and None.  Maybe the Rebels…. oh now I’m just being stupid.

Maybe the NAB Cup? The NAB Cup surpasses Grid Iron as the sport with the idiotic rules.  I’m not sure what the rules are this year, but if it involves 9 point goals, and marks paid for one bounce-one hand, it’s not a sport, it’s a circus.

I know I seem hard to please, but I long for the winter.  I long for the tatty work footy tipping sheet out of the Telegraph to go on the wall, when the girl from accounts is leading because she picks ‘colours’ instead of on form.  I long for a $10 meal at the RSL followed by Super Saturday on the big screens, and picking the St George supporters in the crowd.  They’re the ones at the bar with Wayne Bennett pictures in their wallets, because true love never dies.  Unlike their chance of being premiers again in the next 30 years.

But wait, Rugby League is back! The All-Stars! The Charity Shield! Yes, because we’re all singing the All-Stars song (do they have one) and if you ask a Saints supporter how many charity shields they’ve won, they’re clueless.  Souths supporters carve it into the bedhead.

Am I being a bit harsh?  OK, well come to my place and we’ll watch the Davis Cup together.  Didn’t think so

A snapshot of what we look like at your fingertips

It may just be the nerd in me, but I love statistics. OK, so its only the nerd in me. But does it bother you when people rattle off the wrong stats about your town to you? Like ‘no-one young lives here’, all you see is people with kids etc. Well the Australian Bureau of Statistics has recently developed a site for you to get a snapshot of your local village or town. How much you earn on average, the kids and more Let’s take my suburb… There’s more women than men and it’s a young... Read more
