Let’s get some recognition of compulsive hoarding

Tuesday, 21 February 2012 19:36

hoarders

Until you’ve lived or worked with a hoarder, you’ve not experienced one of the most frustrating moments with another human being.

You can see something is junk. It is junk. But that haunting thought to them is ‘this might be useful’. A sentence that leads to squalor, disease, despair and sometimes homelessness.

It’s a condition that is real and needs real recognition. Like a bizarre form of OCD, hoarding has claimed over 1 million Aussies. A recent conference in Sydney has asked that Compulsive Hoarding Disorder should be separated from OCD, so treatment and cures can be found faster.

Having worked with someone who can’t bear to throw much away, it’s difficult to empathise with this disorder. It’s like you’re seeing black but they’re convinced it’s white. They cry, they get angry, they try reason and bargain over the most bizarre of stuff. As clinical psychologist Dr Christopher Mogan recently put it ‘to throw away something is throw away themselves’. To understand this is the very first small step in tackling this beast head-on

Have you dealt with a ‘hoarder’ before?

How much you earn on average, the kids and more Let’s take my suburb… There’s more women than men and it’s a young... Read more
