NRL Golden Point: Why the game needs controversy

On the weekend we had the 62nd Golden Point match for the NRL. Since the inception of the rule in 2004, there’s been vigorous debate over the need for the Golden Point. I can’t remember why we brought it in, as I don’t recall complaints about draws in the first place!

It seems sometimes the NRL has to become something different to all the other codes just for the sake of it. we kept the torturous McIntyre 8 system to avoid being the same as the AFL, and for what purpose? Spite never seems a great way to run an organisation.

So do we keep the Golden Point rule? Is the option to make it 10 minutes each way and if there’s no winner then declare a draw. Or are we just happy to call a draw, like every other code in the world.
