The days of handouts are over : Joe Hockey

Opposition Treasurer Joe Hockey has been slammed by the government and welfare groups for his comments over welfare payments.

Hockey has told an audience of policymakers in Europe that in western countries the days of ‘handouts’ are over.

"We need to compare ourselves with our Asian neighbours where the entitlements programs of the state are far less than they are in Australia," he said.

"If we talk about the Asian century ... then the Asian countries are our competition, our children's competition”

Hockey has reportedly spoke of means testing pensions and welfare payments.

Presently Australia has 16% of GDP spent on welfare payments, compared with 20-30% averages in Europe.
