The Southern Highlands is officially recognised as a Koala Zone, with more than 3,000
koalas calling our Shire home. From September to February, koalas are far more
active as they search for mates and new territory.
During this time, residents are more likely to see koalas crossing roads or appearing in urban areas.
With vehicle-strike one of the major threats to our local koala population, Wingecarribee Council is reminding drivers to slow down, take extra care and keep an eye out for koalas and other wildlife.
If the koala is sick, injured, or involved in a vehicle strike, call WIRES on 1300 094 737 or Wildlife Rescue South Coast on 0418 427 214 for immediate assistance.
If you see a koala, remember to SPOT;
- S – See: Have you seen a koala?
- P – Photograph: Take a photo, noting when and where you saw it.
- O – Observe: Watch the animal. If it looks sick or injured, keep your eyes on it.
- T – Tell: Report your sighting to Council by calling 4868 0888 or emailing
