Extra Anzac Day Public Holiday Announced for NSW

February 16, 2026 2:00 pm in by

The Chris Minns government says New South Wales will get an extra public holiday when Anzac Day falls on a weekend in 2026 and 2027. That means a day off on the Monday after April 25. It will run as a two-year trial. Right now, NSW doesn’t automatically give a substitute day when Anzac Day lands on a Saturday or Sunday.

Catching Up with Other States

This change brings NSW closer to places like Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory, where extra days are already common. NSW has fewer public holidays than most states. The government says this helps close the gap while still keeping April 25 as the main day of remembrance.

Support and Concerns

Veterans’ groups, including the Returned and Services League of NSW, have backed the move. They say it gives working veterans more time with family. Some business groups aren’t so sure. They worry about extra costs. The government will review the trial before deciding if it becomes permanent.
