Judy Hannan MP has responded to announcements made regarding the future of SIMEC Tahmoor Colliery.
The appointment of liquidators to Tahmoor Coal Pty Ltd, following the Supreme Court decision to wind up the company, is deeply distressing news for our community. This development creates significant uncertainty for local workers and their families who have contributed so much to our region.

SIMEC Tahmoor Coal have since advised that there will be a large number of redundancies.
“The potential immediate loss of hundreds of jobs, along with the significant flow-on impacts to contractors and supporting industries, will be felt across Wollondilly, the Illawarra and the broader region, Wollondilly MP Judy Hannan said.
“My thoughts remain with the workers, their families, and the community who have endured a prolonged period of uncertainty.
“I have been receiving regular and ongoing updates from the NSW Government and The Hon. Courtney Houssos MLC, Minister for Natural Resources, as this process unfolds, and am working with the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, and the Mining and Energy Union to ensure a coordinated NSW Resources Rapid Response to support employees and contractors affected by this decision.
“Wollondilly and Tahmoor has a proud and longstanding mining heritage, and our community is home to a highly skilled workforce ready and willing to continue operating a viable and responsible mining operation,” she said.
Ms Hannan said, “Hopefully the ninth owner of Tahmoor Colliery can be found and arrangements are made to secure employment for workers. For a long time now, the coal mine workers have endured mental, financial and other stresses caused by the uncertainty of the mine’s ownership.
“I understand this will cause concern with the community and I look forward to the fast transition to get this back up and running as fast as possible with the support from the Government.
“I stand firmly beside them and will continue to advocate for support for those affected during this difficult time.
“I have sought assurance from the Government to ensure a Rapid Response and transition to a new company, she said.
