The Hawk on Netflix

If there is one thing we can rely on in this ever-changing world, it is Will Ferrell’s ability to make us laugh at a man who is incredibly confident about something he is increasingly bad at. From the ice rinks of Blades of Glory to the tarmac of Talladega Nights, Ferrell has built a career on the “delusional athlete” trope, and honestly? We aren’t tired of it yet.

Netflix has finally given us a first look at his latest venture, The Hawk, a pro-golf comedy series slated to land on our screens this July. If the teaser is anything to go by, we are in for a treat involving questionable fashion choices, platinum blonde curls, and a whole lot of ego.

The Legend of Lonnie Hawkins

In this ten-part series, Ferrell steps into the spiked shoes of Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins. Back in 2004, Lonnie was the king of the fairway, the number one golfer in the world. Fast forward two decades, and the “back nine” of his career is looking a little more like a chaotic sand trap.

While his body is screaming for retirement and his family is practically picking out his rocking chair, Lonnie is convinced he is just one stroke away from the greatest comeback in sporting history. He has one major left to win to complete the Grand Slam, and he isn’t about to let a little thing like reality get in the way.

What makes The Hawk particularly exciting is the ensemble cast Netflix has assembled. This feels like a bit of a Saturday Night Live reunion, with Molly Shannon playing Stacy, Lonnie’s no-nonsense ex-wife, and Chris Parnell stepping in as Anton, a PGA Tour board member who is described, quite simply, as a jerk.

Rounding out the cast are:

  • Luke Wilson as Golden Fisk, Lonnie’s long-term professional rival.
  • Fortune Feimster as Sam, a new caddie who might be Lonnie’s lucky charm.
  • David Hornsby (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as Stacy’s new partner, Radford.
  • Katelyn Tarver as Natalie, a social media influencer and Lance’s fiancée.

The series promises a polished, high-energy look at the high-stakes (and high-absurdity) world of the PGA Tour.

Speaking of the PGA Tour, they are actually participating in the series, which suggests we might see some familiar faces from the real-life pro circuit popping up to witness Lonnie’s madness firsthand. Lonnie Hawkins might be struggling to find the cup, but we have a feeling Will Ferrell has found another winner.
