Sustainable firewood collection

April 16, 2026 9:25 am in by

As temperatures drop, residents are encouraged to choose sustainably sourced firewood
to help protect our natural environment and biodiversity.

Wildlife across our region depends on fallen timber for survival. Logs and branches
provide critical shelter, nesting sites and food sources for native animals, including
reptiles, echidnas and small mammals. Removing it can gradually degrade habitats and
reduce local biodiversity.

For this reason, collecting firewood from Council-managed land, bushland reserves,
roadsides and national parks is not permitted, and penalties may apply.

A more sustainable option is to purchase firewood from reputable local suppliers who
follow legal harvesting practices. Make sure to ask them where they have sourced their
firewood from and what species it is.

Firewood collection is only permitted in certain State forests with the appropriate permit,
available through Service NSW.

If you notice firewood being collected from Council-managed land, please report it to
Council’s Customer Service Team on 1300 680 888.
