Dog owners unaware of parasite risks

Dog owners across the Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands are being warned about common parasites that can be passed on to humans, potentially putting their health at serious risk.

Around 1 in 2 Australian households (49%) currently have a dog, although 1 in 3 dog owners (35%) are unaware parasites such as tapeworms can be passed on from dogs to humans.

The survey also found dog owners are engaging in risky behaviours such as sharing their bed (56%) and their food (50%), or letting their dog lick their face (55%).

Veterinarian, Doctor Liisa Ahlstrom, says there’s a higher risk of tapeworm in regional areas, meaning local dog owners should take precautions.
