Kiama Council looking into poor rating for Surf Beach

Kiama Council is advising that it’s on the job of figuring out why the water quality at Surf Beach was downgraded to ‘poor’.

The move comes after the NSW Beachwatch 2026 State of the Beaches report, that found that four of Kiama’s five ocean beaches – which had undergone sufficient sampling to warrant an annual rating – were rated as Good or Very Good.

Mayor Cameron McDonald said Kiama’s ageing wastewater infrastructure, was in desperate need of an overhaul, and the Surf Beach rating was indicative of this.
