The Minns Government is reminding motorists that double demerits will be in force over the Labour Day long weekend for all driving offences.
Operation Labour Day will run from 12am Friday 2 October until 11:59pm Monday 5 October 2026, with double demerits in effect during that time to ensure all motorists follow the road rules and drive safely.
Police will be active on roads across the state, targeting the major contributors to road trauma including drink and drug driving, fatigue, mobile phone use, speeding and seatbelt and helmet offences.

Operation Labour Day will be led by officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, supported by general duties and specialist police from commands across the state.
The Labour Day long weekend also coincides with NSW school holidays and the NRL Grand Final, so there’s expected to be more motorists than usual on the road network.
Double demerits are a proven measure designed to deter unsafe and illegal behaviour before it leads to tragedy.
261 people have been killed NSW roads so far this year, compared to 250 at the same time last year.
