2025 road toll too high

January 5, 2026 8:09 am in by

NSW ended 2025 with an unacceptably high number of 355 lives lost on our roads.

Sadly, in 2025, 5 people died on the roads in Shoalhaven and 6 people lost their lives in the Wingecarribee.

Speed remains the single biggest contributor to fatal crashes, often involving only small amounts over the limit. Most road deaths continue to occur on regional roads, with 241 people losing their lives in 2025.

Trauma is also increasing among vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and older people. Fatigue, alcohol, and drug use remain preventable factors in too many fatalities.

With more people traveling during the school holidays, it is especially important to stay alert and make safe, responsible decisions on the road:

  • Drivers and riders: follow speed limits, drive to the conditions, take regular breaks, wear your seatbelt correctly, and never drive impaired, distracted or use a mobile phone illegally – no text is worth the risk.
  • Riders should always wear protective gear.
  • Pedestrians: stay alert, use crossings where available, and make sure you are visible to other road users.

The message is simple and consistent across NSW: slow down, stay alert, and take responsibility. The safest journeys are the ones where everyone makes it home.

Transport for NSW said, every death on our roads is a tragedy, and our thoughts are with the families, friends and communities affected. Behind every statistic is a person who should have made it home safely.
