After responding to dozens of incidents caused by a tornado and severe weather across the Shoalhaven on the weekend, NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Units in the region are opening their doors to boost community preparedness and volunteer recruitment.
On Saturday, 3 October, NSW SES volunteers responded to more than 35 incidents in Ulladulla after a severe storm and tornado tore through the CBD at about 1pm, causing significant damage to homes and businesses.
This weekend, NSW SES Nowra, St Georges Basin and Ulladulla Units will simultaneously open their doors on Saturday 10 October, from 10am-2pm, for a family fun day featuring live demonstrations, hands-on activities, vehicle displays and information about how to stay safe during storms and floods.
Visitors will have the opportunity to meet local volunteers, explore specialist rescue equipment, and learn practical steps they can take to better prepare their homes and families before severe weather strikes.
NSW SES Shoalhaven Local Commander Tracy Provest said the weekend’s tornado and severe weather event was a timely reminder of how storms can impact communities with little warning.
“The tornado caused significant destruction across our community, with roofs blown off properties, windows shattered and homes and businesses affected,” Chief Inspector Provest said.
“Our volunteers worked tirelessly to assist the community, but preparedness starts well before an emergency occurs.
“This expo is a great opportunity for residents to learn simple steps that can make a big difference when severe storms, floods and other emergencies threaten our area.”
NSW SES Deputy Zone Commander, Superintendent Sharon Fox said the event was about helping the community become more resilient while also showcasing the important role volunteers play.
“Preparedness can save lives, and these open days provide a valuable opportunity for people to connect with their local volunteers and learn how to better prepare for storms, floods and other emergencies,” Superintendent Fox said.
“The recent tornado demonstrates just how quickly weather conditions can change, and we want people to leave with practical knowledge they can use to protect themselves, their families and their property.”
The open days will also provide an opportunity for community members interested in volunteering to learn more about joining the NSW SES.
“We have an incredible group of dedicated volunteers across the Shoalhaven, but we’re always looking for more people to join the orange family,” Chief Inspector Provest said.
“Whether it’s helping protect communities during storms and floods, assisting with land search operations, or supporting response efforts behind the scenes, there is a role for everyone in the NSW SES.”
