A man arrested on a fire trail south of Nowra will face court in August, after being charged with murdering his own mother.

Police were called after 58-year-old Sandra Popovic failed to return to her Sydney home last Monday, after telling family she was going to meet a relative.

Her car was found by family members at Winston Hills the following day.

Police believe Ms Popovic was planning to meet with her estranged son Ante, 34, at a reserve in Winston Hills to discuss a possible loan.

They allege the topic was the subject of a number of “hostile” messengers in the days leading up to the meeting.

Tracking of the pair’s mobile phones allegedly showed them leaving the city together, before Mr Popovic returned to his South Coast home.

34-year-old Ante Ivan Popovic was arrested on Thursday after he was found sitting in his car on the Parnell Fire Trail at Tomerong, and was later charged with kidnapping and murder.

Ms Popovic’s body is yet to be located.

Superintendent Barry Vincent said the missing woman’s family was shocked upon learning of Mr Popovic’s arrest.

“When family were informed of the action taken by police (on Thursday), they were obviously shocked,” he said.

“We’re working through that with them and supporting them as best as we can.”

Mr Popovich is due to face court again in August.
