THE NSW Rural Fire Service expects a blaze that engulfed a large haystack at Terrara Road near Nowra will continue to burn for several days.
Shoalhaven Heads 1 and 7 both responded along with West Nowra and Greenwell Point crews were called at about 4pm on Wednesday August 17 to fight the blaze which has destroyed hundreds of square bails of hay.
Access to the fire was difficult according to Operations Officer Ross Smith but mineral earth barriers installed by the property owner prevented the fire spreading.
Heavy tankers shuttled water from a nearby hydrant to a static appliance which was running large diameter hoses in to extinguish the stack.
Additional bulk water tankers are joining the effort today to supply additional water to the seat of the fire.
Heavy machinery is being used to pull the stack apart in order to douse the fire although it is expected to burn and create a smoke hazard across nearby areas for several days.
