Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald has welcomed the Liberal Party’s $26 million pledge towards the redevelopment of the Kiama Sports Precinct.

Mayor McDonald thanked Opposition Leader Mark Speakman and candidate Serena Copley for visiting Kiama, listening to the community, and seeing first-hand the state of its ageing facilities.

“I want to acknowledge and thank Mark Speakman and Serena Copley for their dedicated support, for meeting with our local clubs and recognising how important this investment is for Kiama,” Mayor McDonald said.

“This $26 million commitment is welcome recognition of how important the Kiama Sports Precinct is for our community. Our young athletes, clubs and families deserve first-class facilities.”

He said the pledge must now be matched by the Government to ensure the project is delivered.

“The Liberal Party has now put their figure on the table. The test is whether Labor will match it. Kiama cannot afford to be short-changed.

“Words are one thing, delivery is another. Bipartisan support is the only way our community can be confident this project will be delivered.”

The call comes as Council unanimously adopted its State Government Advocacy Plan, which sets out the key priorities for Kiama ahead of the September 13 by-election.

“These are not ‘nice to haves’, they are projects and investments essential to the future wellbeing of our community,” Mayor McDonald said.

“From sport and housing to roads, water and sewer upgrades, these are the foundations of a liveable, sustainable Kiama.

“Our community has seen major investments flow into neighbouring LGAs, now it is Kiama’s turn. I’ll continue pressing all sides of politics to ensure these projects are delivered.”
