Member for Kiama Gareth Ward and candidate for Kiama Council Yasmin Tatrai have launched a petition calling on the NSW Government to support and fund a trial that could see taxi’s return to the Kiama Municipality.

Illawarra Taxi Network have offered to locate two cabs on a trial basis in Kiama, but the company are requesting government support to underwrite the trial.

Mr Ward wrote to the NSW Government requesting support but at this point the government is unwilling to back a trial.

“Yas and I want to see taxi services return to Kiama. I have been inundated by locals who need public transport and really rely on this service. As a person with a visual impairment, I understand this frustration very personally”, Mr Ward said.

“This petition is about showing the government there is strong community support for a trial so that the operator can have confidence to return cabs to our community.

Candidate for Kiama Council Yasmin Tatrai says she will take up the fight as a Councillor and work with Mr Ward to ensure the interests of locals are heard.

“The loss of Kiama Cabs from our community has meant the loss of an important public transport option and we need to fight to bring it back.

“To me it makes sense to have a trial and I have no doubt this will be successful. From older people, people with disabilities or people who don’t drive, we need a taxi service and this petition will help pressure the NSW Labor Government to stop cutting services and start investing in our community”, Ms Tatrai concluded.
