Expert panel to investigate effects of underground mining

A panel of five experts will be set up by the State Government to investigate the effects of coal mining in the Sydney Water Catchment.

Environmental groups are welcoming the move but say a moratorium on mine expansion is still needed before any findings have been made.

A 2016 audit of the catchment found an increasing number of instances where surface water had been lost due to underground coal mining.

Another study conducted by Dr. Ian Wright last year found unacceptable levels of metals discharging from the disused Medway Colliery.
