An official sod turning ceremony has taken place this morning for the first stage redevelopment of Bowral Hospital.

The $65 million dollar project will include a new clinical services building, new impatient units and theatres, a new main entrance and medical equipment.

Construction is expected to start in the coming weeks and should be completed in late 2020.

A further $50 million dollars was promised during the state election campaign, taking the total spend to $120 million.

Wollondilly MP Nathaniel Smith says it's his first official function since being declared the local member.
