Water NSW raises the alarm bells

Nattai catchment crop adjust

Water NSW is calling for more restrictions on two big coal mines in the Sydney Water Catchment including Peabody Coal's metropolitan and underground mines and South 32's Dendrobium mine, which has a longwall underneath the Southern Highlands.

It comes after the agency made a a submission to an independent expert panel, to state that the environmental consequences were far greater than originally expected.

The submission noted that surface water losses at Dendrobium alone were 1.28 billion litres a year.

With the Independent Planning Commission due to hand down its final decision regarding the Hume Coal mining proposal, Battle 4 Berrima Group Spokesperson Michael Verberkt believes it would be irresponsible to approve more mines.

He says the findings come as no surprise to him.
