One of our Federal Election Candidates in the seat of Whitlam is blaming the high number of informal votes on having the state and federal elections too close together.
In Whitlam the number was close to 8000 and in Gilmore it was more than 5800.
The figure in Gilmore was greater than Fiona Phillips' winning margin.
In the state election, there was optional preferential voting where you could just number one box for the legislative assembly rather than numbering one to six in the Federal election.
Nationals Candidate Stephen Wentworth says it's something the Australian Electoral Commission may need to look at.
