Highlands artist concerned about identity politics

Southern Highlands artist Tim Storrier has raised concerns about identity politics taking hold in the art world.

Mr. Storrier won the Archibald back in 2012 aswell as the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize.

He believes there's too much focus on an artist's gender or ethnicity, rather than the art work itself, and says the Government needs to take greater care with the trustees they appoint to various institutions.

Mr. Storrier feels he needs to be a voice for other artists.

"They're not in a position to make public remarks, but I am to a degree,

"The thing is they won't say anything because they'll be sent to coventry,

"If you're looking at the Archibald, it's pretty obvious that what they're doing is looking at the background, gender or ethnicity of the artist involved,"Mr. Storrier said.
