Kiama MP Gareth Ward has moved a motion in the State Parliament backing recommendations from the Royal Commission to remove protections for members of a clergy of any church to speak up about child sexual abuse.
Currently, the Clergy is protected from disclosing knowledge of child sexual abuse, there have been calls in recent years for the protection to be removed.
Mr Ward says he wants the motion to be passed.
"I support this key recommendation and believe that failure to report child sexual abuse should also be an offence", Mr Ward said.
"Australians pride ourselves on our right to religious freedom, but religious confessions offer no freedoms to survivors who live with lifelong consequences", he said.
