Thieves have broken into Lyrebird Pre School in Nowra and allegedly stolen thousands of dollars worth of plants which were only recently planted in the newly renovated playground.

Around 15 plants and well-established trees were taken on Wednesday night.

Director Belinda Hibbert says up to $2000 worth of plants went missing.

"I got a bit teary myself because we're all very passionate and it's a community based pre-school as well so we all put extra work into that place", Ms Hibbert said.

"Staff come in on weekends and do things and we just take it really personally", she said.

"It's quite upsetting and we just can't believe that someone would do that because we see it as taking from the kids as well".

Police are investigating, anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
