A new report suggests South Coast households are under increasing pressure with the cost of living going up far more quickly than previously thought.

National figures show the average cost of items such as electricity, childcare, transport and education are rising much faster than inflation or wages.

ACTU Secretary, Sally McManus, says it's more proof that workers urgently need a pay rise.

"Working people need their wages to at least keep up with the cost of living because when they don't people stop spending in their local community and they start dipping into their savings", Ms McManus said.

"So wage increases benefit everyone", she said.
