A Victorian sex offender has been arrested at a remote camping spot in the NSW Snowy Mountains, bringing to an end a manhunt that lasted more than six weeks.

Christopher Empey was spotted by a member of the public on Wednesday at Tin Mine Huts in Kosciuszko National Park and was arrested about 5pm.

The 46-year-old is expected to appear in Cooma Local Court on Thursday, where detectives will apply for his extradition to Victoria.

Empey was last seen more than 380 kilometres away in Nowra on the NSW south coast in December after fleeing Victoria to avoid the strict supervision conditions that come with being a registered sex offender.

He had been on the run since November 24 when his court-ordered GPS tracking bracelet was found smashed to pieces along the Hume Highway.

A day earlier he had skipped a court appearance to finalise a supervision order.
