A Sanctuary Point man will appear in court next month after allegedly being found with a knife and prohibited drugs during an operation targeting hoon driving on the Far South Coast last week.

The operation on Friday (8 March 2019), involved officers attached to South Coast Police District and the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command targeting inappropriate driver behaviour in the Bay and Basin, and Sanctuary Point areas.

South Coast Police District Inspector David Cockram said the operation was necessary because of local concerns raised about hoon driving and unroadworthy vehicles in the local area.

“We know potentially unroadworthy vehicles are at an increased risk of being involved in a crash, and we also understand that members of the community see hoon driving and burnouts as a major concern. We are committed to addressing that,” Insp Cockram said.

“Police across the district are committed to reducing trauma on the roads and will continue to patrol and conduct similar operations throughout the year.”

During the 12-hour operation, 153 random breath tests were conducted and two people were charged with drink driving.

Of note, examples of inappropriate driver behaviour include:

- A 23-year-old Sanctuary Point man was charged with assault and armed with intent offences after he was allegedly found with a knife and prohibited drugs. He was granted conditional bail and will appear at Nowra Local Court on Monday 1 April 2019.

- An ACT licensed driver was detected travelling at 117km/h in an 80km/h zone. An infringement notice was issued for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h.

- A 23-year-old woman was charged with mid-range PCA after being stopped for a random breath test at Sanctuary Point. The breath test returned a positive result and a subsequent breath analysis returned a reading of 0.126. She is due to appear in Nowra Local Court on Monday 15 April 2019.
