Currowan Fire Latest - as at 5:40pm

One of a number of air assets dropping retardent to slow the Currowan Fire

An emergency warning is in place for the Currowan Fire, burning north of Batemans Bay. The fire has burnt more than 16,000 hectares and is not yet under control.

Current Situation

  • Fire activity has increased this afternoon due to strong and gusty winds.
  • The fire is burning in a north-easterly direction, towards the area of Turmeil.
  • The fire crossed the Princes Highway overnight. Firefighters and aircraft have been working to slow the spread of the fire on the eastern side of the highway.
  • The fire has crossed both sides of T-Ridge Road. There is also fire activity west of Joes Nose Road.
  • Strong winds are pushing the fire towards East Lynne.
  • The Princes Highway is closed between Turmeil and the Kings Highway turnoff. This has cut access to coastal communities. Check Live Traffic NSW for updates.
  • There is a significant amount of smoke in the area.

Advice

Areas west of the Princes Highway between Termeil and East Lynne.

  • Seek shelter as the fire impacts. It is too late to leave.

Areas between Bawley Point and North Durras, including Kioloa, Depot Beach, Pebbly Beach and Pretty Beach.

  • It is too late to leave. Take shelter as the fire approaches. Protect yourself from the heat of the fire.

South Durras area.

  • Leave now towards Batemans Bay if safe to do so.

Termeil area.

  • Leave now towards Ulladulla if safe to do so.

Evacuation Centres

  • Ulladulla Civic Centre - 81B Princes Highway, Ulladulla.
  • Hanging Rock Sports Club Function Centre - Hanging Rock Place, Batemans Bay.

  • People are encouraged to register online at Register Find Reunite before attending evacuation centres.

If you are threatened by fire

  • Do not be in the path of the fire.
  • Protect yourself from the heat of the fire. Wear protective clothing and footwear. Cover all exposed skin.
  • If the fire impacts, seek shelter in a solid structure to protect yourself from the heat of the fire.
  • If your life is at risk, call Triple Zero (000).

  • Continue to stay up to date with the bush fire situation by checking www.rfs.nsw.gov.au, listening to your local radio station or by calling the NSW RFS Bush Fire Information Line on 1800 679 737.
  • National Parks and Wildlife Service has closed campgrounds in Murramarang National Park, as well as a number of national parks. Check for closures at NSW Parks and Wildlife Service.
