COVID-19 has forced the deferral of the September council elections.
Local Government Minister and South Coast MP SHELLEY HANCOCK says the move is necessary to ensure the health and safety of voters, Electoral Commission staff and election candidates.
" I knows it's six months hence in September, but I think it's just prudent with everything that's going on that we just defer for 12 months then there's some certainty."
"I know there's uncertainty. A lot of councils have been asking me whether I will defer. I think this is certainty. We put a full stop on the elections." Ms Hancock said.
Shoalhaven Mayor AMANDA FINDLEY said it was not unexpected.
"People need to have a bit of certainty about the future and you know certainly six months from now things are probably not going to be better in the COVID space as it's already been four months since the outbreak in China and things are only just starting to change there." The mayor said.
