May - Myositis Awareness Month
Wed 6 May 2020 to Sun 31 May 2020
MAY is World Myositis Awareness month and many plans were in place to celebrate this event. We were planning to hold events in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Perth and Brisbane, but due to the Corona Virus face to face contact events had to be cancelled.
What is Myositis? Myositis is a general term used to describe swelling of the muscles, but the effects of the inflammatory myopathies (often referred to as ‘‘Myositis’’) are much more severe than just inflammation. Myositis patients suffer from their immune systems attacking their body’s own normal, healthy tissue, resulting in inflammation or swelling. Myositis can cause muscle weakness, and patients often live in chronic pain and have long-term health problems that lead to permanent disability.
During May, our Myositis patient and family support group will:
• hold live online, a Q & A session for our members with some of Australia’s leading Myositis medical specialists and researchers.
• publish a newsletter with the latest information and well-being tips including recommended exercises for Myositis patients.
• provide information to access international educational forums with leading Myositis medical experts.
