I visited the September 11 Memorial in February 2018.
It was a cold and wet day, and there weren't many people there as I walked slowly around the memorial. I read anonymous names and shed some tears as I tried to take it all in. The memorial itself is very simple: two large voids marking the location of each of the Twin Towers, surrounded by walls bearing the names of those who passed away. Beside each name is a slit to allow flowers to be placed, and this is what moved me the most; knowing that relatives and friends of those lost could and would place their tributes here, and also knowing that I could never comprehend their loss and what they felt about this incredible tragedy.
It was a confronting experience but I'm glad (?) I did it.
