Jimi Hendrix was born on this day in 1942, began playing guitar at age 15, and at one stage was the world's highest-paid performer. His innovative upside-down left-handed guitar playing style and use of effects made him a pioneer in electronic sound, and he has three albums in Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Albums Of All Time.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as the "...greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music."
Hendrix passed away, too young, in 1970; he was just 27 years old.
