as it turns out, my microwave is extremely controversial♬ original sound - Noel Big deal
First, there was the gold or blue dress, then there was Yanny and Laurel… Now, this microwave is the next big thing breaking the internet!
Is the sound going up or going down? Apparently, it’s causing a lot of debate and controversy and has the internet divided.
TikTok creator @noelbigdeal, who now calls himself ‘the microwave guy’ posted the video of him and 'microwave girl’ in front of a microwave arguing if the sound is actually going up or down. They bet a whole 35c on the question, with microwave guy saying the sound goes down and microwave girl saying the sound goes up.
The video currently has over 4.7 million views, over 885K likes, and over 76K comments.
One comment on the video said, "Can Charlie Puth confirm please?” which gained over 5K likes. This caused music star, Charlie Puth, who is known for his perfect pitch, to chime in with his opinion. On his piano, he plays the tune and then says as he plays, "It goes down, and then up.”
"Ok um, I wasn’t wrong but I also wasn’t right so I will clarify. It’s going up to the first C sharp, the almost C sharp but the first time it hits it, there’s some like slight distortion in your microwave. I can’t believe I’m doing this… There’s some slight distortion under the first C sharp, so it gives it an impression of it being… It’s basically an octave on the first one, which gives the illusion of it going down and up which is why different people hear it differently."

He then concludes, saying, "It’s up three times, first one is an octave. Ok, final answer."
In another revelation, Noel said the makers of the microwave, Whirlpool USA, contacted him and clarified saying that the answer is the sound is going down.
The audio illusion is similar to the 'Yanny or Laurel' illusion and the 'Brainstorm or Green Needle' illusion where different listeners hear different things. What do you hear?
