Women and children fleeing domestic violence in the Shoalhaven now have access to 15 new crisis and transitional homes, with a major housing project officially opening its doors this week.
The new Yidili crisis and transitional housing development, delivered by SASSI, was funded through a $10.2 million contribution from the Albanese Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund Crisis and Transitional Housing program.
The project includes 14 self-contained homes and a dedicated support and training centre, with capacity to accommodate up to 42 women and children at a time. Residents will also have access to onsite case management, safety planning, referrals and life-skills support designed to help families rebuild their lives after experiencing domestic and family violence.
Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said “Safe and secure housing remained one of the biggest hurdles facing women trying to leave abusive relationships.”
She said, “The project would provide a secure place for families to heal, regain independence and reconnect with their communities.”
SASSI CEO Penny Dordoy said, “Demand for safe and affordable housing in the Shoalhaven continued to outstrip supply, making projects like Yidili critical to supporting women and children escaping violence.”
All homes have been built to Silver Livable Housing Design standards and include fenced yards and pet-friendly features, recognising the important role animals can play in recovery from trauma.
