A brand-new humpback whale calf is becoming a star attraction for whale watchers in Jervis Bay

Passengers on board Jervis Bay Wild early morning whale cruises last week discovered the beautiful calf with its mother and a full size escort.

At other times during the week, whale watchers have seen the baby, which has been named ‘Little Wild One’, mimicking its mother, attempting tail slaps and cruising along out in the middle of Jervis Bay.

Greta Lewis from Jervis Bay Wild said, “We have given the new family its space, but it has been observed a number of times and at one stage the mother was pushing the baby up under her nose.

“The pristine conditions in the bay are supporting this new born that has arrived very early,” she said.

Ms Lewis said, “The northern migration is very much underway at the moment and we are closing in on seeing our 900th whale for the season.

“The whales are looking healthy and in great numbers.”

Ms Lewis anticipates the mother and calf will remain in Jervis Bay for the next week to allow the bay to gain strength and condition before continuing in their northern migration.
