A dangerous stretch of Forest Road will be upgraded through a $452,400 funding injection from the Federal Government’s 2024-25 Black Spot Program.
Federal Member for Gilmore and Chair of the New South Wales Black Spot Consultative Panel, Fiona Phillips, said a 1.7 kilometre stretch of road, east of the Princes Highway, would be made safer for people living in and around Callala Bay, Callala Beach and Currarong, as well as visitors to the coastal villages.
“Improvements will include the installation of safety barriers, signage and profile line marking. The surface of this section of road will be upgraded to a high level, non-skid surface,” Mrs Phillips said.
She welcomed the Black Spot funding injection which targets roads where crashes have occurred or are at risk of occurring.
“Forest Road was nominated because we’ve seen a lot of crashes and many near-misses on this road,” Mrs Phillips said.
“It’s great news for people and families that travel that road to work and school every day, and for the many people who visit our beautiful beaches and Jervis Bay.
“Forest road is a key road leading onto the Princes Highway, so anything we can do to help fix that road is great.
“Black Spot treatments help reduce serious injuries and deaths on our roads, and get people home safely.”
Mrs Phillips said programs of this sort are very effective, saving the community many times the cost of the relatively minor road improvements that are implemented.
“Every accident on our roads is one too many,” she added.
“I encourage anyone who knows of a dangerous intersection or road length that would benefit from safety improvements to consider nominating that site for investigation.”
