Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has joined with Bomaderry High School P&C representatives to officially launch a new community petition calling on the NSW Government to provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians across the Princes Highway in Bomaderry.
“The NSW Minns Labor Government thinks it’s okay for kids to cross the highway between Cambewarra Road and Bolong Road,” Mr Ward said.
“With increasing traffic volumes, and the expansion of housing in and around Bomaderry, the current situation is not good enough.
“I have been contacted by concerned parents of school students and local residents who cannot cross the highway safely.” Mr Ward said.
“Because the Minns Government isn’t interested in this issue, I’m starting a community petition so people can add their names in an effort to apply pressure to the NSW Government.
“There are no traffic lights or safe crossings north of Bolong Road.
“Given the number of local schools, small businesses and a TAFE on this section of road, I am calling on the NSW Government to provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians across our Princes Highway in Bomaderry’ Mr Ward said.
“Student and pedestrian safety should be a top priority for any government. I’m disappointed with the responses from the NSW Government and I’ll be fighting to make this highway safer for Bomaderry locals,” Mr Ward said.
Bomaderry High School P&C President Cath Philpott welcomed the petition launch and said: “Many Bomaderry High School students need to cross the Princes Highway on a daily basis.”
“They live within the 2.9km allocated bus service distance from the school. Cambewarra Rd has become increasingly busy with the addition of the Woolworths Shopping Complex, so our school students need to navigate Cambewarra Road traffic along with crossing the Princes Highway.
“The roundabout at McDonalds is an extremely dangerous traffic zone, and our students have nowhere to cross safely during the two busiest traffic periods of the day,” she said.
“The government cannot keep adding housing and commercial infrastructure to our area without providing the essential road safety facilities. Don’t wait for a pedestrian to lose their life before something is done!” Ms Philpott concluded.
